Following a social media campaign by Blue Planet Society and Just One Ocean, Comic Relief director Emma Freud announced on Twitter on Tuesday that all balloons will be removed from Red Nose Day fundraising packs after 2019.
Five balloons are included in each Red Nose Day free fundraising pack – with the option to buy more. Comic Relief’s decision to remove the balloons means that it is likely that hundreds of thousands of pieces of wildlife-killing litter have been prevented from entering the environment.
Red Nose Day 2019 is on Friday 15th March
In addition to balloons, the amount of single-use plastic merchandise sold by Comic Relief (and the BBC who gave us Blue Planet II) is truly astounding. Red Nose Day has a sustainability problem that needs urgent attention.
Whilst we appreciate the swift action by Emma Freud and Comic Relief, much more needs to be done. The next step should be a plastic-free Red Nose Day.
